In the late 80’s and early 90’s my eldest brother took me Ice Skating On The Utica Marsh, those are some of my fondest memories of spending time on the ice.
My family was always on the ice, the boys played hockey and my sister used to figure skate. That means we spent our fair share of time in ice skating rinks all over the state. I have a lot of fond memories from playing hockey, and going to my sisters recitals. But when I look back, the best memory I can think of is when we used to go ice skating out on the Utica Marsh.
Skating on The Utica Marsh Is One Of the Best Things I have Ever Done During The Utica Winter.
I have no idea who used to care for the ice to keep it clear, smooth and enjoyable, but I certainly remember going there. The First time, my brother took me and my youngest brother to the marsh. We parked on Platt St. then carried out sticks and skates over the train tracks and through some brush after that it was wide open. An area was set up to be a hockey rink, with dasher boards or a boarder made out of snow. We were not the only people out there. There was definitely a serious game when we showed up. Any hockey we were going to play was on hold until the game was over.
Regardless, we took off our boots and strapped on our skates. This is where my experience began. As soon as I was laced up, I took off with a stick and puck. The first time I navigated my ice skates on the marsh through the trees will forever be the most wonderful ice skating experience I will ever have.
Ice Skating with Mother Nature In Utica
It was a sunny but cold day, there were some parents and bystanders on the edge with a fire in a steel barrel standing around, probably drinking beers and definitely loving a Utica NY winter. I was maybe 10 or 12 years old. Those trees were like defensive opponents that I could pretend were real people. I loved weaving between them and trying not to lose the hockey puck.
Soon after the previous game let-up we all got on the home made rink and started getting ready for a pick-up game. It was cool because everyone got play, all ages were welcome and we were all having fun.
We were only out there for a few hours, but it seemed like the whole day was spent on the ice. Nowadays when its cold or the sun looks right as I drive pass the location I long for the time and the opportunity to get out there and do it again.
I don’t know if people are still going out there and doing it, but I would love to hear from anyone who is, who wants to, or who may remember ice skating on the Utica Marsh.
