Shopping local in Utica NY doesn’t have to be a hassle and doesn’t mean you have to go to some out-of-the-way boutique and purchase items no-one wants. Keeping it local simply means being mindful of the impact that our actions as consumers have on the local economy.

  4. Your holiday pies and pastries from Holland farms (their chocolate pie is amazing)
  5. Your wine and liquor Seneca and Bremer’s both have great varieties at competitive prices

local-shopping-utica-nyThe holiday shopping that doesn’t contribute to your community is the kind you do from your couch. Buying all your gifts on Amazon because it’s easy and may save a few dollars has repercussions for the businesses in our area. If you don’t have time to get out and shop know that most local businesses have websites consider placing orders within our area. So this Black Friday feel free to shop all you want and when it comes to cyber Monday why don’t you just skip the shopping and go to work or better yet plan a new family tradition…cutting down trees at Massouds Tree Farm anyone?

It’s really Easy to Shop Local and be mindful of the Local Economy

It can mean going to a locally owned business in the community like Meyda Lighting where almost everything in their show room is manufactured right here. Stop at the Brewery shop after lunch at O’Donnell’s to pick-up a seasonal twelve pack or other specialty item. Or it can be as simple as a trip to your local shopping mall.  While you might be thinking that a department store like Target or Hobby Lobby isn’t a local company, please remember that these stores are located in our communities.  They employee our friends and neighbors you definitely deserve your support too.

Let’s say you go shopping at the Sangertown Mall to a place like Macy’s, now Macy’s wasn’t formed here in Utica New York and it certainly has other locations around the country. While all of that is true what your local Macy’s, Target and Kohl’s do have here is people working, living and spending their money in the area just like you. The seasonal hiring these stores do provide a boost to our local economy.

In short shopping at the boutiques is great, shopping at small businesses is great, shopping at the local mall is great. Any of these things will keep money and jobs in our local community.
