For a good cause a ton of people in the greater Utica area participate in the Heart Run and Walk. An event where the proceeds and donations gathered go to help fund research for heart disease. Even though it sounds very serious people have a fun time and turn it into a party.
It’s one of the first big outdoor parties of the year in Utica. People have been dying to get out of their house. The fresh air gets everyone acting crazy.
The home stretch, the last run, the big hill at the end is called “Heartbreak Hill”. This is where all the walkers are surrounded by fans and crowds of people cheering them on as they take the last hill. There’s music, drinking and fun all around. No one is getting paid to be there, it’s all for the good of the community.
I remember the first year I went to hang out and participate on heartbreak hill. What an experience, people all over having a good time, stereos blaring and people cheering everyone who is walking for this cause.
As I mentioned, there is some drinking. Heartbreak Hill is sort of the party stretch. The first time I went I definitely had too much to drink. Being so early in the morning I think it has a different effect on you. But it’s a really fun time and I recommend anybody who hasn’t been to Heartbreak Hill… should go.
After the last walker walks by everyone seems poor into the two bars on Main Street in New York Mills, Uncle’s Tavern and The Galleria. These places are packed full of people, they have DJs playing music, people dancing and everyone is having a great time.
If you can… try to go to events like this. They’re helpful for our community and they’re great to be a part of. You’ll feel good and really make the most of living in the Utica, NY area.
